History
Ton History.
Everyone thinks that Ton was founded in Bystřice pod Hostýnem (Czech Republic) in 1861. As a matter of fact, Ton's story started in Austria around 1820, where Michael Thonet and his sons were woodworkers. Increasing demands of this wooden seating at the time of the Austrian-Hungarian Empire led to opening new plants surrounded by beech forests offering enough material for the manufacturing process in Germany, Poland and the Czech Republic to serve all of Europe. The factory in Bystřice pod Hostýnem is among the oldest bent furniture plants in the world. At the end of World War II, plants in Czech Republic were nationalized until 1991, when Ton became a private business.
Manufacturing
Manufacturing an Iconic Product.
Ton has made its mark as a bent furniture specialist.
From the moment wood is acquired, it is put into the lengthy process of drying or saturating to maintain optimal moisture content based on the time of year, steaming at a temperature of roughly 100 degrees Celsius in a kiln, followed by the delicate task of workers manually bending the wood into the desired shape for the product requested. Once bent, the chairs are sent for staining/finishing, followed by assembly.

Each piece undergoes thorough inspection at each manufacturing level, ensuring Ton's top-quality for each finished product. Further, all items undergo specific strength and durability tests in accordance with the European standard EN 161397 Furniture – strength, durability and safety. Requirements for non-domestic seating, withstanding even the most demanding tests. This is why the company can give a five-year warranty for structural integrity and know that the chairs will last much longer.
Iconic Items
Being the long-established brand that it is, Ton has boosted its popularity over the last century and a half, with their signature bent furniture products such as 004, 014 and 018 chairs and banana stool. Such items have become design staples for those aiming to re-create a vintage European atmosphere, inspired by classical cafés in Paris and Vienna.
